Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi stood solemnly behind the casket of former President Jose Mujica as it lay in state at the Legislative Palace in Montevideo before being taken to its final resting place on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
For two days, Mujica’s casket was mourned by thousands of Uruguayan citizens and dignitaries at the Legislative Palace. On Thursday afternoon, the funeral procession departed amid tears and heartfelt songs.
Notable leaders present at the ceremony included Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Chilean President Gabriel Boric, and Uruguay’s current President Yamandú Orsi.
Mourners sang “A Don José,” a song from the 1960s that was officially declared a national cultural anthem of Uruguay in 2003.
As the hearse drove away, hundreds of Uruguayans bid farewell to the former guerrilla fighter, widely respected for his modest lifestyle and progressive ideals.
In accordance with his final wishes, Jose Mujica’s body was cremated, and his ashes were scattered across his own land.
