Gitablogsport.com - At least two people have died following an incident in which the Mexican Navy’s sailing vessel, Cuauhtemoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City on Saturday night (May 17), according to Mayor Eric Adams.
“Out of the 277 individuals aboard the ship, 19 sustained injuries. Two are in critical condition, and sadly, two others have passed away due to their wounds,” Adams wrote in a post on X, Sunday (May 18).
The two deceased reportedly fell from one of the ship’s masts. A law enforcement official confirmed that they were pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital.
The vessel has since been relocated to Pier 36 in New York.
City officials suspect a technical malfunction may have caused the vessel to crash into the bridge. However, authorities have emphasized that the current information remains preliminary and subject to further investigation.
Earlier, the Mexican Navy’s training ship struck the Brooklyn Bridge while navigating the East River at approximately 8:26 PM local time.
According to reports from the New York Police Department and the Mexican Navy, the ship’s masts hit the underside of the bridge as it passed beneath.
Footage captured by residents shows the Cuauhtemoc halted beneath the bridge, as emergency crews on-site responded swiftly to the incident.
New York emergency services confirmed that they immediately took action upon receiving reports of the collision.
