The collision occurred at approximately 8:26 PM local time, when the Cuauhtémoc training ship was sailing along the East River. During a maneuver, the ship accidentally hit the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge.

The crash brought the Cuauhtémoc to a halt underneath the bridge. Nearby crane operators and emergency responders acted swiftly to assist the crew.

A source reported that three sailors were in critical condition, while the remaining 17 sustained various injuries.

The Cuauhtémoc was on its annual training voyage at the time. Mexican Navy spokesperson Captain Juan Caballero said that the total number of personnel on board is still being verified.

All traffic lanes on the Brooklyn Bridge were temporarily closed in both directions but reopened around 10:30 PM local time.
