The accident resulted in injuries to 20 crew members and caused damage to the ship.
Here is the timeline of the incident involving the Mexican Navy’s training ship striking the Brooklyn Bridge.
The collision occurred at approximately 8:26 PM local time, when the Cuauhtémoc training ship was sailing along the East River. During a maneuver, the ship accidentally hit the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge.
“While the Cuauhtémoc sailing ship was arriving in New York, an incident occurred involving the Brooklyn Bridge, which led to structural damage to the training vessel. Training voyages have been temporarily suspended,” the Mexican Navy stated on their official X account.
“Personnel and equipment are currently being evaluated by local authorities and the Navy, which is providing full support,” the statement continued.
According to video footage circulating on social media, the ship’s masts appeared to strike the bottom of the bridge, causing parts of the structure to break and fall onto the deck.
Despite the impact, the Brooklyn Bridge did not suffer significant structural damage. It was temporarily closed but reopened later that night.
The crash brought the Cuauhtémoc to a halt underneath the bridge. Nearby crane operators and emergency responders acted swiftly to assist the crew.
A source reported that three sailors were in critical condition, while the remaining 17 sustained various injuries.
“The situation is still developing, and specific details have not yet been confirmed,” the New York Emergency Department said via its official X account.
The Cuauhtémoc was on its annual training voyage at the time. Mexican Navy spokesperson Captain Juan Caballero said that the total number of personnel on board is still being verified.
All traffic lanes on the Brooklyn Bridge were temporarily closed in both directions but reopened around 10:30 PM local time.
