The Inspiring Story of the Manurung Family: Embracing Uniqueness and Going Viral on TikTok | Gita Blog Sport
Gitablogsport.com - The Manurung family from Kisaran, Asahan Regency, North Sumatra has captured the hearts of many with their unique journey. Despite several members living with Barber-Say Syndrome, their positivity, creativity, and strong family bond have made them a source of inspiration.
Their story reflects how embracing diversity can bring unity, strength, and even viral success on platforms like TikTok and YouTube.
From Construction Worker to Viral Content Creator
Syarif Surya Ali Manurung, the third child in the family, used to work as a construction laborer. During a break between projects, he decided to create a simple dance video with his sibling and uploaded it to his TikTok account @surya.manurung.
Unexpectedly, the video quickly went viral. Within minutes, Surya's follower count skyrocketed by thousands.
Turning Negativity Into Motivation
Surya admitted that he initially felt down due to negative comments about his family’s physical condition. However, with support from his father and encouragement from positive netizens, he pushed forward and began consistently creating content.
“I used to feel insecure about how I looked, but now I don’t feel that way anymore,” Surya said in an interview on Truly’s YouTube channel.
Building a Positive Community on Social Media
Surya expanded his content beyond TikTok and launched a YouTube channel called “Keluarga Manurung” (The Manurung Family), which now has over 200,000 subscribers and has been awarded the Silver Play Button by YouTube.
The family has since formed a small content team. According to Mardiah Manurung:
“We’re happy to be known by many. We want to be open and encourage others. Life must be fought for. We must always be grateful.”
Living in Harmony, Embracing Differences
Among the six siblings, Tiur Maeda Safni Manurung is the only one who does not have Barber-Say Syndrome. Still, she has never felt different or left out. The family lives in full harmony and mutual support.
Remarkably, their local community embraces them warmly. There is no discrimination only friendship, respect, and togetherness.
“We always visit our neighbors. Our environment is very supportive and full of kindness,” one of them shared.
What is Barber-Say Syndrome?
Barber-Say Syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disorder that may cause loose skin, sparse hair, and facial abnormalities. Despite these challenges, people with this condition can live normal lives. The Manurung family proves that spirit and resilience are far more powerful than appearances.
